Evolution of Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy

I have always enjoyed providing massages to people. When I was in high school I used to massage my friends during our lunch hour, just for fun. I knew I enjoyed massaging others but was completely unaware that I could actually make it into a career. I also knew I wanted to go to college but I wasn’t born into a family that could afford college and I also didn’t want to be thousands of dollars in debt. So what did I decide to do…I joined the military and left home when I was 19.

As my military career progressed I discovered that I really enjoyed the business side and decided I eventually wanted to own my own business. In 2002, I began to pursue a bachelor degree in Business Management. The military only allows you to take two classes a semester, which means it would be a long time before I would be able to complete my degree. All while being a full time employee, a full time mom and a full time college student, I was able to finally complete my degree in 2012. After receiving my degree, I began to focus on my military career so I could make it to retirement. I knew owning my own business wouldn’t be easy and having retirement pay might ease a little of that burden.

During the time between completing my degree and my retirement I looked into several massage schools and although most had night classes, I discovered that I needed clinical hours in order to complete the course. So my pursuit of becoming a massage therapist, while in the military, had to come to a halt. In 2019, I decided I was gonna move to Alabama so my children could be closer to their siblings. I began looking up schools and discovered there were only three in the entire state. Luckily for me, one was only about 45 minutes from where I planned to move. I contacted the School of Massage and Bodyworks, found out how much it would cost, spent a year saving and was able to pay half up front, in order to reserve my spot in the class. The next year, I retired from the military and started Massage School! By the end of the next year, I was fully licensed and ready to go. Directly after graduation, I opened my own massage business. Which was very successful.

Although on the outside it seemed I had everything going for me, on the inside I knew I wasn’t meant to be in Alabama anymore. So I decided to move. I landed in Longmont and immediately fell in love with the area. Working for yourself has some benefits, but the one thing it lacks is additional training and learning from others. I knew I wanted to keep being a massage therapist but quickly learned that it would be a little bit more difficult to get established in a location that has a massage studio on every corner. So I decided to take on additional training to improve my massage techniques. I found Charuta bodywork trainings and immediately signed up for the course. This type of additional training was exactly what I was looking for! I got into this business to help people and her course taught me exactly that. Shortly after that Charatua asked me if I wanted to start working for her. I absolutely love what I do and now I actually get to make a difference in the lives of others.

One day, I’ll get back to my own practice I’m sure with Charuta’s blessing. She wants the best of the best at her clinic and knows every great talent must shoot for the stars. I love that there is no sense of competition here. I also love that this career forces all of us to grow. I look forward to seeing where this journey takes me. In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you on my table.
